I didn't leave the flat today. I intended to walk over to St. Pancras to the Eurostar ticket office and then stop at Waitrose for a few groceries. But one thing led to another and then it became unnecessary.
First of all, I got to bed very late last night (3:30-ish) and slept in to get my requisite six hours' sleep. There is an upside to this, being that when we cross the pond in exactly two weeks I will already be on New York time! I made eggs for brunch, read a little, edited a bit, talked to Meg, and then my Dad and Molly (who is visiting him), and before I knew it it was getting dark (which happens early here, like 4 PM). When I realized that I could make dinner with ingredients I already had, that sealed the deal, the errands could wait until tomorrow.
I also re-sent an email from yesterday morning to La Compagnie, the French airline that had cancelled our original return flight and is now diverting us through Paris. I re-sent it because I noticed that I had mistyped the email address, which explains why I didn't get a response from them. The reason for my email was to request in writing their verbal agreement to me back in September that they would reimburse us for the cost of the two extra suitcases that are not covered on our tickets to Paris. British Airways will charge us £70 per bag, or a total of £140. When you add the £40 to get to Heathrow Airport, it would be less expensive to take the Eurostar (and much more convenient). In September, I was told by La Compagnie that they wouldn't pay to get us to Paris that way, but, if they renege on their promise to pay the baggage fees, then we may just go ahead and take the train anyway.
After dinner, I watched the first episode of The Crown on Netflix. I have watched very little television here, only two seasons of Broadchurch and an adaptation of Rebecca. Some people at the St. Pancras dinner the other night raved about this series. The first episode was very good. I'm not sure how I feel yet about John Lithgow as Winston Churchill. Harriet Walter, our new favorite actor from the Donmar Theatre productions we've seen, plays his wife. And of course I have a particular fondness for Eileen Atkins from her role on Doc Martin.
I watched the second episode a while later and decided Lithgow does indeed make a decent Churchill.
